104: June 25th Special with Jenny Winings

Ten years ago today, on June 25th, 2009, Michael Jackson tragically passed away amidst preparations for what was to be his final concert, This Is It. For fans the world over, the pain still lingers… Each year we come together on this day to remember, honour and reflect on the magical life that was Michael Jackson’s, as well as the love and timeless art he gave to the world.

In this June 25th Special, Jamon and Q are joined by long-time fan Jenny Winings. Now based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jenny shares her fan story, the experience of seeing Michael in concert at both nights of his Madison Square Garden 30th Anniversary celebration, and memories of the times she met Michael, including when she shared a car with the King of Pop and Gavin Arviso during a shopping trip to Toys’R’Us, as well as when she visited and stayed at Neverland Ranch.

This special episode also features touching thoughts on how our guests from the past year feel that Michael should be remembered, as well as a number of musical tributes to commemorate Michael and the positive influence he’s had on all our lives.

As we pay tribute to the great man that Michael was on the tenth anniversary of his passing, we want to remind fans the world over that none of us are alone. We all share in the grief, and love, we have for Michael.

103: Vindication Day Special with Larry Nimmer

The MJCast present their fifth annual special episode recognising Michael Jackson’s acquittal from false child molestation allegations on June 13th, 2005. On each of these annual episodes, the team brings a very special guest onto the show to discuss their experience with the trial that so deeply affected Jackson’s life. This is a time for reflection, education, and bringing together our community.

In this year’s show, Jamon and Q welcome Emmy-nominated filmmaker Larry Nimmer, who was a key component of the defense team in Jackson’s 2005 criminal trial. When Judge Melville decided against allowing the jury to physically visit Neverland, Nimmer was hired by Jackson to film, document and narrate almost every area of the ranch so that the jury could experience it with as much detail as possible in the courtroom. The extensive documentation Nimmer collected feels even more poignant this year, in the shadow of the film “Leaving Neverland”, when the Ranch has been maliciously and incorrectly depicted as an attraction to lure young boys.

In this chat, the guys discuss Nimmer’s early life and career in film, how he ended up being hired by Jackson and his team, and his thoughts going into the trial. He goes into detail about Neverland itself, working with the staff there, and addresses many of the big misperceptions and myths that have lingered since the mid-2000s. Nimmer also discusses the trial itself, as well as his thoughts on the Arizo family, and reflects on the current accusations made by Robson and Safechuck.

101: Taryll Jackson Special

Q and Jamon are thrilled to welcome special guest Taryll Jackson to the show! Taryll is the second son of Tito Jackson and Delores ‘Dee Dee’ Martes, member of 3T, and an amazing solo artist. His new album, “Crazy Love”, has recently dropped, and the guys couldn’t be more excited to chat with Taryll about his new music, upcoming shows, and his incredible music-royalty family.

In this discussion, Taryll shares amazing stories with the guys about growing up playing music with his bothers, Taj and TJ, what it was like to experience the mega-success of 3T, how he moved into the recording and production side with 3T’s most recent album as well as remixing other artists’ music, and how he’s continued to evolve with his solo work. He also goes into personal accounts of what it was to deal with the sudden, tragic loss of his mother, the positive and negative of being part of such an iconic family, and touches on the never-released 3T album. Taryll, Jamon and Q also delve into a discussion on the posthumous reality of Michael Jackson and the fraudulent Cascio tracks which he blew the whistle on in 2010. And, of course, Taryll shares memories of growing up with his father, Tito, and his uncle, the King of Pop.

The MJCast is honored to consider Taryll a Friend of the Show, and hopes that listeners get a chance to hear his new album and see him in concert!

100: Brad Buxer Special

To celebrate The MJCast’s 100th episode, Jamon and Q put the focus back on music and welcome a particularly special guest, Brad Buxer. Buxer was one of Michael Jackson’s key artistic collaborators, who worked with Jackson for 20 years, from the Dangerous album onwards, and who would become one of his closest producers, musicians, and songwriters. Along with Michael Prince, there was no one else who Michael Jackson trusted more to capture his most personal creative visions.

The guys dive into an incredible, in-depth discussion with Buxer about his early life and music career working with icons such as Stevie Wonder, how he first came to work with Jackson, what it was like creating the Dangerous, HIStory, Blood on the Dance Floor, and Invincible albums, his role as Musical Director for both the Dangerous and HIStory World Tours, the experience of playing music and writing songs with Jackson, insights into Jackson’s life as a father, details about working together in the final years of Jackson’s life, his thoughts on unreleased tracks, and much more.

In addition, The MJCast is honored to have received many congratulations from previous guests on the show, whose audio snippets are included in this episode.

It’s been an amazing run so far, and incredible to watch the show evolve and grow. The MJCast team couldn’t be prouder to be well into Season 5. Jamon, Q, and Elise want to thank each and every listener, supporter, guest, and friend who has been part of this experience. We look forward to our next 100 episodes!

098: We Had a Break…Allegedly…

Jamon and Q are back with their first regular news and discussion episode of Season 5! The guys have lots of updates to catch up on after their between-season break, though, admittedly, much of that news has been cast in a dark shadow with the release of the deceptive film, Leaving Neverland. Still, the fellas carry on, and dive into the good and the bad of these troubling times we are in. They chat about developments around the upcoming Michael Jackson musical, Macaulay Culkin’s defence of MJ, a recently restored Michael Jackson and George Harrison radio interview, and the fantastic MJ-inspired music video for “Let’s Shut Up & Dance” by Jason Derulo, LAY, and NCT 127. They also discuss Naomi Campbell’s story behind the “In The Closet” video, the English-language publication of the first book in the “Jackson Collector Series”, called The Backstage Pass Collection, plus much more.

For their main discussion topic, the MJCast hosts are joined by Friend of the Show and The MJCast Legal Correspondent Charles Thomson, as well as first-time guest Anika Kotecha, of the MJ Innocent campaign. As many listeners have eagerly awaited, they have a serious discussion about the aftermath of Leaving Neverland: the world’s reaction, the Estate’s response, incredible efforts from fans, Taj Jackson’s amazing campaign for his counter documentary and his appearance on radio and TV shows, and where we stand now, as a community.

This episode also includes updates from The MJCast correspondents, Finds of the Week, and a selection of great music breaks. The MJCast looks forward to a great Season 5 to come!

095: Leaving Neverland Roundtable

The recent Sundance screening of Dan Reed’s inflammatory film, Leaving Neverland, has, without a doubt, rocked the Michael Jackson community. Despite being based on the easily discredited stories of Wade Robson and Jimmy Safechuck, and lacking any sort of real investigation, balanced interviews, or responsible journalism, this film has reignited the media’s firestorm against Jackson’s legacy, even as Michael is not here to defend himself.

In this special roundtable episode, The MJCast brings together a panel of experts and those who have seen the film and are taking action against it. Q and Jamon lead the discussion, and are joined by Taj Jackson (member of 3T and son of Tito Jackson, who is currently raising funds to produce his own docu-series), Charles Thomson (The MJCast’s Legal Correspondent and award-winning investigative journalist who has exposed a range of actual child abusers and cover-ups for The Yellow Advertiser in the UK), Marcos Cabotá (a film director who has seen the film and was one of its earlier critics) and Samar Habib (of the Michael Jackson Academia Project, who has been a leading figure in the online movement against the film).

The panellists discuss Reed’s film, the Sundance Q&A session, and the media reaction, as well as developments coming together to counter the film, such as Taj’s docu-series, which can be supported on GoFundMe. Taj also speaks to his own experiences of actually spending time with Michael at Neverland. The group offers talking points for anyone struggling with how to respond to people who say that Michael Jackson was an abuser, as well as coping strategies and words of encouragement.

Now, more than ever, it is the time to come together as fans, to support each other, and to remind the media and general public of the truth. The MJCast hopes that this episode provides resources, strength, and a sense of community during this challenging moment.

094: Harrison Funk Special

This week, just as The MJCast was about to release a surprise episode between seasons, news broke that the Sundance Film Festival was preparing to screen a documentary smearing Michael Jackson as a child molester.

As shockwaves rippled through the fan community and listeners sprang into action, it seemed to be an inappropriate time to release the episode.

The show’s special guest was to be Harrison Funk, renowned entertainment, fashion, and advertising photographer best known for being Michael Jackson’s personal photographer from the early 1980s through the mid-2000s. The interview with Funk had been recorded months ago, and The MJCast team had kept it in the can, ready to release as a special New Year treat for listeners.

But, upon re-visiting the interview in light of this week’s horrifying news, the timing could hardly be more apt. Harrison spends a great deal of time during his conversation with Jamon Bull and Charles Thomson discussing the false abuse allegations which plagued Michael from 1993 onwards. He speaks movingly about the physical and psychological toll the allegations took on his friend, and how those who loved Michael rallied around him, but watched helplessly as his life and his health slowly fell apart until his eventual death in 2009.

As the media prepares to stick the knife into Michael one more time and give it a sharp twist, this interview with one of Michael’s closest friends makes for a sobering listen.

In addition to the allegations, Harrison discusses the kind of man Michael really was, not the lie Dan Reed, Wade Robson and Sundance are going to try and sell the world. The MJCast and Harrison explore stories around Michael’s process as a live musician, the Victory Tour, the Bad era, Harrison’s love of photography, his fascinating observations as he photographed Teddy Riley producing Cascio tracks in the studio and SO much more!

This episode of The MJCast is dedicated to Friend of the Show and fellow MJ podcaster Jordan King of King Jordan Radio, who recently and tragically passed away. We will always be missing you, Jordan.

We hope this episode brings some positivity and truth to an otherwise dark time for MJFam.

Stop Leaving Neverland Now

The 2019 Sundance Film Festival is set to premiere Leaving Neverland later this month. The film is a new two-part 233 minute Dan Reed documentary, focusing on the alleged sexual abuse of Wade Robson and James Safechuck by Michael Jackson.

Following initial confusion around who the subjects of the documentary might be, the website for Reed’s Amos Pictures clearly shows a photo with Jackson and Robson, who testified in Michael Jackson’s 2005 criminal trial as a defence witness, and then later sued Michael Jackson’s Estate claiming he was molested after-all, only to have his case thrown out in 2017.

A representative for Michael Jackson’s Estate has commented “This is yet another lurid production in an outrageous and pathetic attempt to exploit and cash in on Michael Jackson. Wade Robson and James Safechuck [who was Jackson’s companion as a child and sued Jackson’s estate over sexual abuse claims] have both testified under oath that Michael never did anything inappropriate toward them. Safechuck and Robson, the latter a self-proclaimed ‘master of deception,’ filed lawsuits against Michael’s estate, asking for millions of dollars. Both lawsuits were dismissed. This so-called ‘documentary’ is just another rehash of dated and discredited allegations.  It’s baffling why any credible filmmaker would involve himself with this project.”

Join with us in demanding that this production does not go ahead. We must demand that the Michael Jackson estate pursues legal action and shuts this documentary down.

Dear Sirs,

I am writing to implore you to take immediate legal action over a new film accusing Michael Jackson of molesting two boys.

Sundance Film Festival has announced plans to screen a film titled Leaving Neverland, in which Wade Robson and James Safechuck will accuse Michael Jackson of grooming and molesting them over a years-long period.
These two men, as you know, were behind a lawsuit which the Estate successfully had thrown out of court in 2017.

It goes without saying that in the wake of the #MeToo movement and the move towards trial by media over allegations against celebrities, this film poses the most existential threat to Michael Jackson’s reputation and legacy since his death in 2009.

For roughly the last five years, the Estate has used its vast resources to mount legal challenge after legal challenge to frustrate and delay a lawsuit by Vera Serova over the inclusion of three fake songs on a posthumous album. It has also used its clout to suppress a positive documentary about Michael Jackson’s final photo shoots.

So fans around the world are now questioning why the Estate is not using its power and resources to try to block the release of this extremely dangerous film, which has the potential to completely decimate Michael Jackson’s reputation forever.

In 2017, a campaign by Michael Jackson’s family and fans successfully blocked the release of a film in which Michael Jackson was to be portrayed in a demeaning way by the white actor Joseph Fiennes.

That film was merely insensitive. This film could destroy Michael Jackson’s reputation forever. The Michael Jackson fan community therefore calls upon you to employ every legal resource and avenue available to you to frustrate, impede and sabotage this film in any and every conceivable way.

Sincerely,

[Insert name here]

Jamon Bull
