Another very funny episode, I burst out laughing when Q said about Price of Fame if it had come out on the Pepsi commercial and nowhere else “We would have been going crazy, like FROTHING AT THE MOUTH, for that song” 😂
Regarding the video intro to the Bremen concert, I remember at the time it was said that Carl Orff’s widow had opposed to the use of her husband’s O Fortuna piece and a different music had to be used until they reached an agreement.
Mojo.com, funny you like it, I always find it frustrating; this woman talks and talks and you want to SEE and HEAR that thing that she’s referring to but she never lets you, she talks all the way and skips to the next item.
I think it’s the first episode where we hear a jingle from a guest and I’ve LOVED to hear Brad Sundberg say “Hey this is really really Brad Sundberg”; first it made me laugh because it sounded like “it’s really me, for real!” and it took me a second to join the dots with the “really really Brad” thank yous on the Bad album leaflet, that was great!
Hearing Annie’s story, refugee from Croatia and how the Heal the World foundation supported them and how music helped her was emotional, thank you for sharing her story, it was a special moment.
Talking about Annie, I remember when the Annie mix came out! I remember being little, during the winter holidays in France, in the car with my grandparents driving us to the mountains and the radio was on and they started playing it, with that bass-rich sound that radios have and it was amazing! I remember begging my Mum as soon as we got home after the holidays to buy me the 12″ vinyl of the Smooth Criminal single, so I got mine from the supermarket 😂
Such great memories. Bruce Swedien had done a different mix for the single release and it’s the one used for the short film and all the mixes on the maxi single. Later when we got a CD player at home I asked father Christmas for the Japanese maxi CD from the local shop (the one with the blue silhouette): https://www.ecosia.org/images?q=smooth+criminal+japanese+maxi+CD
Ah, that 12″ vinyl cover was so beautiful, it felt like having an album for Moonwalker.
As for the other Smooth Criminal remix featured on the episode, erm… I don’t think I’ll ever listen to it again.
It would be fantastic to hear those 9 minute versions that Brad Sundberg mentions.
I remember reading an interview with Quincy Jones in 1988 where someone asks him to explain his role, and aside saying they almost didn’t include Man in the Mirror on Bad (what?!) he says “I cut Michael’s babies’ arms… Michael wants to do these long, long songs that will never fit on an LP, so I come and I cut them!”
Another great episode, guys, thank you!
